In 1964, a multinational team of archaeologists and engineers working together for UNESCO, saved the Abu Simbel temples from the rising waters of the Nile, caused by the construction of the Aswan High Dam. The temples were cut into 20 ton blocks and reassembled in higher ground, 65 m above from the original location.
The Abu Simbel temples were constructed during the reign of Ramses II as a monument to the pharaoh and his queen Nefertari (meaning “beautiful companion”).
